General Stairlift FAQ’s

What is a stairlift?

A stairlift is a mobility aid that helps people who have difficulty using the stairs due to age, injury, or disability. It is a motorised chair that runs along a track attached to your staircase, allowing you to safely and comfortably move up and down your stairs.

How does a stairlift work?

A stairlift is powered by an electric motor and is controlled by a joystick or remote control. It runs along a rail that is attached to the stairs and is secured to the floor. When you want to use the lift, you sit on the chair, fasten your seatbelt, and operate the joystick or remote control to move the chair up or down the stairs.

What types of stairlifts are available?

There are two main types of stairlifts: straight and curved. A straight stairlift is designed for a straight staircase, while a curved stairlift is custom-built to fit a curved or angled staircase.

How long does it take to install a stairlift?

The installation process for a stairlift usually takes a few hours. However, the time it takes may vary depending on the complexity of your staircase and the type of stairlift you choose.

Are stairlifts safe?

Yes, stairlifts are designed to be safe and reliable. They come with several safety features, such as seatbelts, sensors that detect obstacles on the stairs, and emergency stop buttons. Additionally, all stairlifts should meet safety standards set by regulatory bodies.

How much does a stairlift cost?

The cost of a stairlift can vary depending on several factors, including the type of stairlift, the complexity of your staircase, and any additional features you may want. Typically, a straight stairlift will cost less than a curved stairlift.

Can a stairlift be used by multiple people?

Yes, a stairlift can be used by multiple people as long as they can safely and comfortably fit on the chair. Additionally, many stairlifts come with remote controls, so you can send the chair up or down the stairs for another person to use.

What happens if the power goes out?

Most stairlifts have a backup battery that will allow the chair to continue to function in the event of a power outage. However, you should check with your stairlift provider to make sure that their model has this feature.

Do stairlifts require maintenance?

Yes, like any mechanical device, stairlifts require regular maintenance to ensure that they are functioning properly. It is recommended that you have your stairlift serviced once a year by a qualified technician.

Can a stairlift be removed?

Yes, if you no longer need your stairlift or if you are moving to a new home, it can be removed. A qualified technician can remove the stairlift and patch any holes that were made during the installation process.
